Flame pattern Irish stitch Pocketbook
Vivid vegetable dyed colors are typical of irishstitch work such as this pocketbook. This one uses shades of indigo, cochineal & osage orange dyed wool yarn in a simple pattern for a striking effect.
Functioning rather like wallets in the eighteenth century, these useful cloth cases were made in many different materials. Generally made by women or girls and carried by men, they contained documents as often as currency.
As modern clothing is not equipped with the roomy pockets they require, they are more useful in the present day to historical re-enactors and as accessories in period office scenes. They also make a nice small evening bag. For daily use, they can be made to order as checkbook covers, by altering the way they fasten shut -- please inquire if you would like one!
