Adam and Eve tent stitch picture

$ 1,825.00

Tent stitch pictures like this one were popular projects for adolescent girls during the eighteenth century. They often attended a school where they were instructed in embroidery techniques desirable as skills for gentlewomen. This piece is worked primarily with silk thread in tent stitch. Stitches were worked in traditional tent stitch, i.e., stitched in a way that results in a distorted canvas that must be stretched back to its rectangular shape when the work has been completed. The needlework is sewn to an acid free museum style mount and framed behind conservation clear glass. The Reclining Shepherdess tent stitch picture is another example of schoolgirl needlework.
