White linen tablecloths were used throughout the 17th-19th centuries. They varied in the fineness of the cloth and the degree to which it was whitened. In general, the finer and whiter, the better its use. Large households would have many cloths in a wide range of materials to suit the use of family and servant use; as well as those needed for entertaining. |
