Polychrome Crewel Pocket

vegetable dyed wool thread on linen fabric, wool tape trim
11.25 x 17 inches

Tie-on pockets like these were necessary to the eighteenth & early nineteenth century housewife’s wardrobe during a time when women’s clothes rarely had sewn-in pockets. This single pocket is made of linen fabric, embroidered with a typical 18th century design in worsted crewel yarn dyed in a variety of colors using vegetable dyes. It is back with printed cotton and trimmed with vegetable dyed worsted twill tape.
