Miniature Cushion Cover |
Vegetable-dyed wool thread on linen canvas
approx. 8 inches diameter

This tiny cushion is typical of the many domestic articles made by women for their homes during the nineteenth century. It is worked in fine wool using cross-stitch at a gauge of 12½ squares per inch. The fine gauge and vegetable color make it typical of work done prior to the 1860s. The colors are vibrant as was popular at that time, but do not have the garish quality of later aniline dyed merino work. The back is finished in ecru cotton velveteen and has the modern convenience of a zipper closure. We can also supply a small wool filled cushion if you need one.
