Tent stitch pictures like this one were popular projects for adolescent girls during the eighteenth century. They often attended a school where they were instructed in embroidery techniques desirable as skills for gentlewomen. This piece is worked primarily with silk thread in tent stitch. Stitches were worked in traditional tent stitch, i.e., stitched in a way that results in a distorted canvas that must be stretched back to its rectangular shape when the work has been completed. The needlework is sewn to an acid free museum style mount and framed behind conservation clear glass. The Reclining Shepherdess tent stitch picture is another example of schoolgirl needlework.

This cross-stitch panel is complete, but not made up; meaning that it can be finished as you wish. It would make a fine cushion, fire screen covering or square upholstery for a piece of the correct size. The work has been done in fine doubled wool, at a gauge of 9 squares per inch; resulting in a sturdy yet flexible piece of embroidery.

Tie-on pockets like these were necessary to the eighteenth & early nineteenth century women’s wardrobe during a time when their clothes rarely had sewn-in pockets. This single pocket is made of linen fabric, embroidered with a typical 18th century design in worsted crewel yarn dyed in shades of blue with natural indigo and trimmed with blue and white checkered tape. The reverse is plain creamy white linen.
We currently have two other examples of 18th century women's pockets: a pair in printed cotton & a single crewelwork pocket.

As the name suggests, these decorative envelopes are intended to hang on the wall for the purpose of holding lightweight articles such as papers. They provide a useful and attractive period solution for holding letters, notes, pictures, etc. Even though the backs are made of quality rag paper, they are surprisingly sturdy, as long as you don’t over stuff them!
We also have an example of an irish stitch wallpocket.

Work in progress needs to be kept clean, and handy—so that progress can easily be accomplished. Bags like this were (and still are!) perfect for containing a small handwork project like a pair of socks or piece of embroidery and the materials to make them. In times past, women who went visiting would require a small sack like this to protect the handwork that accompanied them, but they were often used at home as well, for the sake of keeping the work tidy between sessions of sewing.

It is not clear whether these pastoral crewel work'd scenes were ever made up originally as valances. One finds many remade to serve this purpose from what appear to have been petticoat borders. We have made quite a few over the years. Customers like them best for their lively appearance and ability to add color and interest to rooms filled with a mix of period and reproduction furnishings. Although many period embroidered valances appear to have been unlined, we recommend lining them as protection from light and dust.

A similar, delightful landscape valance can be made in the exact length to fit your specifications. It can be finished up to 15” tall and about 60” wide. The lining material is fine weight natural colored linen fabric and the edges are trimmed with a narrow edging of wool twill tape (in a vegetable dyed color of your choice).

It is firmly filled with wool and backed with vegetable dyed wool fabric. It is not uncommon for functional articles that were used everyday to be attractive as well as useful. Women often exchanged sewing accessories like this for one another as tokens of friendship.

This is not intended as a reproduction of a period doll, per se; rather, it is a cloth versions of a period doll with miniature reproduction clothing. Each garment has been made as period doll clothing was—considerably smaller than full size, but retaining a surprising amount of detail. The removable clothing is held in place with straight pins—as women’s clothing often was before buttons came into regular use.
Dressed in a typical 18th century housewife's garb, this doll features a hand-painted linen body & handmade clothes: removable linen petticoat, cotton morning gown, linen apron, linen kerchief & linen cap. Her hair is made of vegetable dyed wool/mohair yarn and her body is firmly stuffed with washed raw wool.

Made in the manner of early quilts, this colorful bed cover is composed from fairly large pieces of printed cotton fabrics. This particular assemblage uses brightly colored dutch chintzes to recreate the kind of quilted counterpane that served both the practical and the aesthetic requirements of the late 18th century.
These photos are taken before the top has been quilted to better show the printed fabrics.

During the 18th and early 19th centuries plain wool blankets were sometimes embroidered at home to create more decorative bed coverings. It is difficult to know whether they were always used as the top-most layer, or whether they sometimes served simply as enjoyment for those who used them.
This one is made from a European surplus blanket, made and lightly used during the 20th century--some of these blanket have a small amount of nylon fiber for added durability . The hand embroidered design is typical of those stitched by skilled needlewomen at home.
The size is suitable for covering a three quarter (48 inches wide) OR double (54 inches wide) bed, with a base valance or dust ruffle.

Functioning rather like wallets in the eighteenth century, these useful cloth cases were made in many different materials. They were generally made by women and carried by men, containing documents as often than currency. They were made in a variety of techniques and we have several examples from which to choose: crewel work, zig zag pattern & diamond pattern irishstitch designs.
As modern men’s clothing is not equipped with the roomy pockets they require, they are more useful today to historical re-enactors and as accessories in period office scenes. They also make a nice evening bag for a lady.
For daily use, we offer them made to order as checkbook covers, by altering the way they fasten shut.

As the name suggests, these decorative envelopes are intended to hang on the wall for the purpose of holding lightweight articles such as documents. They are a useful and attractive period solution for holding letters, notes, pictures, etc. Because the backs are made of good rag paper they are surprisingly sturdy, as long as you don’t over stuff them!

Needlework upholstery is colorful, durable and adds lively interest to a room setting. Polychrome irish stitch patterns such as this one were popular during the eighteenth century as a decorative alternatives to chairs upholstered with woolens such moreen or harrateen. They were made by affluent housewives as well as professional embroiderers--the making of a full set at home often involved the hands of numerous pairs of female hands.
We frequently make needlework seat coverings, either in large or small sets, or as custom upholstery for a single chair. Allow about 4 weeks for each chair seat.

This tiny cushion is typical of the many domestic articles made by women for their homes during the nineteenth century. It is worked in fine wool using cross-stitch at a gauge of 12½ squares per inch. The fine gauge and vegetable color make it typical of work done prior to the 1860s. The colors are vibrant as was popular at that time, but do not have the garish quality of later aniline dyed merino work. The back is finished in ecru cotton velveteen and has the modern convenience of a zipper closure. We can also supply a small wool filled cushion if you need one.

This whole cloth quilt reproduces a popular early New England bed covering. It's face of smooth, brilliant red worsted twill contrasts with the loosely woven yellow vegetable dyed backing. While sewn by machine, it is constructed entirely in a period manner, including a simple knife edge finish on four sides.

This combination of stylized vines and flowers with a pastoral scene is an example of nineteenth century work done at home by women of all ages. The making of useful and beautiful household articles provided the opportunity for creative expression, as well as instruction for girls in the many needle techniques required to keep house. A “rug” of this kind is unlikely to have been much used on the floor, but would more likely, have been found adorning the top of a table or chest.

Tie-on pockets like these were necessary to the eighteenth & early nineteenth century housewife’s wardrobe during a time when women’s clothes rarely had sewn-in pockets. This single pocket is made of linen fabric, embroidered with a typical 18th century design in worsted crewel yarn dyed in a variety of colors using vegetable dyes. It is back with printed cotton and trimmed with vegetable dyed worsted twill tape.

Tent stitch pictures like this one were popular projects for adolescent girls during the eighteenth century. Young women often attended a school where they were instructed in embroidery techniques desirable as skills for gentlewomen. This piece is worked with both wool and silk threads in tent stitch, as well as embellished with French knots worked over the tent stitching. It is stitched in the traditional manner, i.e., in a way that results in a distorted canvas that must be stretched back to its rectangular shape when the work has been completed. The needlework is tacked to a sealed wooden stretcher frame and framed in the period manner.

We also have a few copies of the kit version for this project in case you want to make your own.

The Adam & Eve tent stitch picture is another example of this kind of schoolgirl needlework art.

A firmly stuffed pincushion in the shape of a ball, this example is both beautiful and functional. The top is meant to receive pins and hold them safely until needed while sewing. There are also pins stuck straight into the ball, the heads of which are arranged to spell out, "a token of affection". It is typical of the kind of useful accessories that young women made for their friends during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Functioning rather like wallets in the eighteenth century, these useful cloth cases were made in many different materials. They were generally made by women and carried by men, containing documents as often than currency. They were made in a variety of techniques and we have several examples from which to choose: crewel work, double fold pattern & diamond pattern irishstitch designs.
As modern men’s clothing is not equipped with the roomy pockets they require, they are more useful today to historical re-enactors and as accessories in period office scenes. They also make a nice evening bag for a lady.
For daily use, we offer them made to order as checkbook covers, by altering the way they fasten shut.
